Field Outing Relfection
My first field outing took place at High Tech High, during non-school hours. Primarily I thought we were going to plant native San Diegan plant around High Tech High village. I was wrong. We made “seed bombs” with the following materials: clay, soil, and seeds. Everybody who participated in this field outing is part of the project roots and shoots. Our goal is to write a digital book for the Ipad called The War. We are in a big battle against invasive species. It was a good idea to have “seed bombs” to end this war. We were given materials and instructions on how to create the seed bombs. The steps were simple. They consisted of taking a piece of clay flatting it out, then adding soil and seeds. After it had to be rolled up again moving it in circular motion in your hand, until it was formed into a sphere. We organized them in plastic containers according to the seeds in the bombs. I can definitely say this was an amazing experience; we connect so much with our local environment. Seed bombs, are a magnificent idea because it’s a visual change. The fact that you can see were you having collaborated to make your community better motivates you to continue doing the same.
During the process of making the seed bombs, we talked about the importance of eliminating invasive species was. Plants are a big list on the category of invasive species since they are easier to spread and difficult to eliminate. An example of a very harmful plant in the county of San Diego is the “Ice plant.” Ice plant is everywhere. On every highway, steep landscape, or garden. It spreads so fast and takes over water keeping the San Diegan plants from developing. The reason why it is so easy for these plants to take over is because they are not native and have no competition with plants from their home.
