A. Essential Question: What are Invisible Children
B. Intro Invisible Children is an organization that was started by three young graduates in
2003 who were traveling to Africa to film a movie. Their trip became something much more
meaningful then that. Jason Russell, Bobby Bailey, and Lauren Poole witnessed a horrifying
story where the children were the victims, and the weapons. The three graduates documented
thousands of children having to leave home to try to find a ‘safe place’ so they are not abducted
at night. According to them, “seeing this was like modern Holocaust”. They later went back to
America, created a documentary, and showed it to ICI , so they can help them raise awareness
about they tragedy that’s happening in Uganda. In just a few short years, the ICI has managed
to raise awareness about Invisble Children on Oprah, CNN, National Geographic channel, and
in high schools and colleges all around the country.
Conflict In the northern area of Uganda, 30,000 children have been abducted in
approximately the past 20 years. This war started because of a man named Joseph Kony, who
wants to change Uganda so that it is based on the ten commandments. Joseph Kony claims to
be a messenger from God, read minds, do magic, and says that he had a vision from God to
become a leader. Joseph Kony is a man full of power and with many protectors. He dedicates
himself to the abduction of children. He kidnaps them and turns them into child soldiers; beating
them if they misbehave, cutting their ears, nose and making them eat their own flesh. Kids carry
LRA (Lord Resistance Army) supplies until they become weak which leads to him killing them or
leaving them to die. Children are taken and are in many cases forced to kill their own family
members so they wont have anywhere to escape. Kidnapped kids (child soldiers) make up 90%
of the LRA’s soldiers. There aren’t any particular or war that the kids have to fight, they just
attack villages to conquer more child soldiers- they take away the lives of innocent people.
Today no one thinks Kony and his movement represents a loving God and Christianity or Islam,
but all know it is about demonic control of children, boys and girls, young men and women,
doing the bidding of a crazy man. Children have been moved into villages which are said to be
protect by the government, but those have just been words, not actions. They find safety in
numbers of towns such as Gulu, where local ministers and bishops have joined them as they
seek safety from the LRA.
